The Federal Court of Appeal’s decision today to uphold the listing of plastic manufactured items as a toxic substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 provides legal clarity on the federal government’s authority to regulate plastics.
FHCP and its members remain committed to working with governments and partners to advance a circular economy for plastics in Canada. Plastics play a vital role in protecting the safety, quality, and affordability of everyday goods, and our shared objective is to ensure plastics remain in the economy and out of the environment.
FHCP will continue to support science-based, data-informed policies and work constructively with governments and stakeholders to reduce plastic waste and strengthen circular systems.
